Menstrual Health Management (MHM) is a key component of the broader Water, Sanitation and Hygiene in Schools (WinS) agenda and a critical factor in achieving gender equity in education. While South Africa has made notable progress through the Sanitary Dignity Framework (2019) and the establishment of the South African Coalition on Menstrual Health Management (SACMHM), there remains a pressing need for improved coordination, resource alignment, and institutional accountability across sectors and levels of government. In many schools, the lack of adequate infrastructure, menstrual products, and support services contributes to absenteeism and poor learner well-being, especially for girls. Addressing MHM through an intergovernmental and multisectoral approach is essential to ensuring dignity, inclusion, and uninterrupted learning for all learners.

This webinar, jointly hosted by the Department of Basic Education (DBE), UNICEF and Days for Girls International aims to showcase South Africa’s evolving efforts and foster dialogue on embedding MHM into education and public health systems through coordinated national and subnational actions.
